OAS EMPLOYEES RELEASED IN HAITI

The Organization of American States is pleased to announce the release of two of its employees and a spouse kidnapped in Haiti on the afternoon of Thursday December 29. The two technicians from the OAS Electoral Support Program were en route to an electoral facility when the incident occurred.

The couple was released on Friday at around 6:15 p.m., and the third victim, earlier this afternoon. All were well treated and came to no bodily harm.

The Secretary General of the OAS, His Excellency José Miguel Insulza, has expressed his satisfaction in the wake of the peaceful conclusion of the hostage incident. He applauds the tactful negotiations carried out by the OAS Special Mission team in Haiti in coordination with Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin. Mr. Insulza, at the same time, joins his Special Representative in Haiti, Ambassador Denneth Modeste, in thanking the representatives of the international community as well as the Haitian authorities and people for the numerous expressions of sympathy and support received.

The OAS strongly condemns these acts of violence against innocent persons, who, moreover, are working in support of elections that will provide the opportunity for Haitian society to forge a new beginning and tackle the serious social, economic and security issues facing the country. The OAS reiterates its full support for the elections and will continue to do its part in assisting the electoral authorities in conducting a free, fair and credible process.
 

FUNCIONARIOS DE LA OEA LIBERADOS EN HAITÍ

La Organización de Estados Americanos anuncia con gran satisfacción la liberación de sus dos funcionarios, y la esposa de uno de ellos, secuestrados en Haití la tarde del 29 de diciembre. Los dos técnicos del Programa de Apoyo Electoral se dirigían a una oficina cuando ocurrió el incidente. El matrimonio fue liberado el viernes a las 18.15 horas y la tercera persona el mediodía del sábado. Todos fueron bien tratados y no sufrieron maltrato físico.

El Secretario General de la OEA, José Miguel Insulza, expreso su alegría por la conclusión pacifica de este hecho y destaco el tacto negociador del equipo de la Misión Especial de la OEA en coordinación con el Secretario General Adjunto, Albert Ramdin. Al mismo tiempo, el Secretario Insulza instruyo a su representante en Haití, Deneth Modeste, que agradezca a los representantes de la comunidad internacional, a las autoridades haitianas, y a numerosa gente, por las expresiones de apoyo recibidas.

La Organización de Estados Americanos condena firmemente estos actos de violencia contra personas inocentes quienes, además, se encontraban trabajando en apoyo al proceso eleccionario, que dará oportunidad a la sociedad haitiana de forjar un nuevo comienzo y hacer frente la seria situación social, económica y de seguridad que enfrenta el país.

La Organización de Estados Americanos reitera su total respaldo a las elecciones haitianas y continuara lo que este de su parte para respaldar a las autoridades electorales en la conducción de un libre, justo y confiable proceso.
